DW Reusables’ Croatia Division Reduces CO2 Emissions with Renewable Energy Partnership through HEP’s ‘ZelEn’ Program

17 aprila 2017

The DW Reusables, Plastics Division in Karlovac, Croatia committed to reduce their CO2 emissions by utilizing renewable energy sources. To meet this goal, they have signed a contract with HEP, a Croatian electricity distributor to get electricity produced from renewable sources, under brand name “ZelEn – prijatelj prirode” (GreenEnergy – friend of nature).

Carbon dioxide (CO2) enters the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels—coal, natural gas, and oil—and also as a result of certain chemical reactions. In 2014, CO2 accounted for about 80.9% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. These emissions are harmful to the Earth and it’s up to us as a company to do our part in reducing our CO2 footprint. We do this by making efforts through various programs in our different locations. To us, truly sustainable value is found when balancing the needs of Our Business, Our Environment and Our People.

Mario Tomljanović, General Manager of Karlovac noted, “Renewable energy sources play an important role in reducing CO2 emissions in our atmosphere, which is one of the fundamental objectives of the DW Reusables group. Our effort is made to achieve reduction in CO2 emissions by improving energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy sources. For this reason, the selection of ZelEn was a logical choice, which showed our social responsibility and our concern for the environment.“

DW Reusables’ Karlovac location is 4.553 m2 with approximately 100 employees. Paul Baeyens, the Managing Director for the Injection Moulded business stated “I’ve been very passionate about renewable energy for many years. We cannot turn our heads away from the threat that climate change poses to nature and we should all take responsibility for it.”

In the the last year alone, Plastics as a division has saved 198,922 tonnes of CO2 and the Croatian site makes its contribution to the achievement of the corporate goal by reducing CO2 emissions by 30% until 2030—their expected reduction of total CO2 emissions at the site is 92%.
